To leave or not to tip in Greece

Tips in Greece

In Greece you are expected to tip practically in all places: in hotels, restaurants, tourist walks and taxis. However to be expected does not mean that it is an obligation and in reality It depends a lot on how the service has been provided.

In any case, it is an expense that we must consider when ordering our travel budget, since everything adds up. So let's see where maybe we should leave tip and how much:

  • hotels: it is a custom to leave a tip to the porter or to someone who helps you with your bags, also to whoever takes care of cleaning your room. Calculate one euro per suitcase and the same for cleaning.
  • restaurants: As tourists we must leave a tip in all restaurants but the amount depends on the final bill. Calculate 5 or 10%. It is left on the table next to the ticket or if you pay with a card you can tell the waiter before the table closes. There is usually a service included, bread and water, but it is not usually much.
  • taxis: It is not an obligation but the drivers are very used to tourists leaving tips. Curse! The best thing then is to round the final fee up 5 or 10%. If you hire a private driver you can leave an extra 20 euros per day.
  • tours: here you can not evade the tip. If you go in a group you can pay about 5 euros per person per day but on private tours about 20 euros is the usual.

My advice is that you always have coins on hand, change, to make all these tips. Finally, if your experience as a tourist has not been good and someone wants to charge you something or pressures you for a tip then you can contact the so-called Tourist Police and make your complaint.
