Naucratis a Greek emporium in Egypt

Naucratis in Egypt

Naucratis in Greek it means "the one that governs ship", it is a city or Greek emporium in Ancient EgyptIn other words, it is a commercial center, currently it is a city in ruins.
I was in the nile delta, in the Canopus arm, 72 km. south-east of Alexandria.
This city was very important since it was the first commercial colony of the Greeks on Egyptian soil. There are doubts about who was in charge of giving that city to the Greeks, it is believed that it was Pharaoh Psammetico I in the XNUMXth century BC, or Ahmose II in the XNUMXth century BC.
It was also said that before the Naucratis city there was a factory, (the factories trade with the metropolis that is always far away), with inhabitants come from Miletus. Most of the inhabitants were Greek mercenaries who were in the nearby Egyptian fortress of Daphnae.
Herodotus went so far as to say that for a long time it was the main authorized port in the Nile delta, all sailors who wanted to go to the center of Egypt had to pass through the port of Naucratis. It was the most important port until the Persians conquered the city, but when the city of Alexandria in 331 BC the port was no longer important and became secondary.

It was only in 1884 that archaeologist Flinders Petrie discovered the Naucratis city and began with the excavations, where many Greek ceramics and temples were found in honor of the Greek gods, with these findings it was confirmed that the city was in that place. Most of what was found in the excavations has been lost or is scattered around the world.
