Poseidon, lord of the seas

Poseidon

One of the most important gods of the Greek mythology es Poseidon. The name is well known, there are several ships that are called like that and we even have a tragedy-movie (the one in which the ship turns over and the survivors must fight to get out through the hull).

The truth is that the name Poseidon it has rather uncertain origins. There are conflicting opinions although it is believed that the name very possibly has pre-Greek, Indo-European origins. Anyway Poseidon is one of the twelve Gods of Olympus and its dominions are the seas. He is usually represented as a mature, muscular man with long hair and a beard.

According to Greek mythology Poseidon is the second son of Cronos and Rhea and although his father seems to have wanted to devour him at birth, he is saved by Zeus. So some versions say, others say that his father did not even try. The story continues that Poseidon was left without being the patron of Athens after losing to the goddess Athena, something that appears in part of the reliefs of the Parthenon. Look when you visit, it is one of the first you see when you arrive.

It is said that Poseidon he was very fond of women and that is why he had lovers and many children (although he also liked men somewhat). His consort was a nymph, the daughter of Doris and Nereus, and many of his children were great heroes - like Theseus, for example.
