The traditional Greek costume

Perhaps this is one of the costumes that we most identify with Greece. Impossible to lose sight of those nice shoes, right? The full suit is called fustanella and it used to be worn by warriors and diplomats so it was declared as the national costume for men.

It is usually seen in the mountainous areas of Greece, in the center and south of the country, and derives its name from the pleated white skirt, the fountanella, which is made with a triangular piece of cloth called langolia, and sewn diagonally. . This skirt has 400 pleats and they represent the years under which Greece was under the control of the Ottomans. The Greek Revolution of 1821 was carried out by men dressed like that, brave men who fought against the Turks, as well as the official uniform of the presidential guard, the Evzones.

Today the white skirt is accompanied by an embroidered vest called "fermeli" that can be blue, brown or black. The brown is the one worn by the captain of the guard. He wears a sash at the waist and pompom shoes, huge pompoms, called tsarouhia, which were used to climb mountains.
