The tragic story of Oedipus

Oedipus and the Sphinx

Thursday is Greek mythology day. In this case, I am interested in reviewing a little the figure of Oedipus, who is always so named in families. Oedipus He was the son of the King of Thebes Laius and Jocasta and is known to have killed his father and married his mother without knowing it.

According to the myth, Laius received from the oracle the information that if he had a male child, he would one day kill him. He avoided it whenever he could but one day he got drunk and had sex with his wife Jocasta. From this union, a male child was born, of whom the king lost interest, hurt his feet and abandoned, trying to escape the destiny announced by the oracle. The injured newborn was abandoned but some shepherds found him and took him to the king of Corinth. There he was raised by the queen who baptized him with the name of Oedipus, "swollen feet."

As a teenager, Oedipus began to suspect that he was not the biological son of the kings of Corinth and traveled to Delphi to ask the oracle. Here he learned that one day he would kill his father and marry his mother and to avoid this he decided never to return to Corinth. He traveled and on the way to Thebes, at a crossroads, he met his real father, Laius. They fought over who had the right to pass and Oedipus ended up killing his biological father without knowing that he was the king of Thebes.

Later, Oedipus manages to defeat the Sphinx and its riddles, a mythological animal that tormented the city of Thebes. That is why he becomes famous and marries Layo's widow, Jocasta, his real mother. Four children were born from the union, among them the famous Antigone. Later, with a plague ravaging the city, Oedipus discovers the whole story. From this point there are several versions about the continuation: that Yocsta finds out and commits suicide, Oedipus takes his eyes off, Oedipus flees, he is exiled, his children lock him up in the palace.
