Vasilopita, the Greek New Year's cake

Approaches end of the year And maybe you are thinking of spending that night in Greece, so most likely the first day of next year you will try the typical Greek New Year cake or cake, the Vasilopite. It is a true tradition in Greece and it is present in all the family months since according to tradition it blesses the house and brings good luck in the new year.

The cake is made from milk, yeast, eggs, butter, flour, sugar and almonds. The oven is turned on, the ingredients are mixed and the chopped almonds are sprinkled on the surface so that once the cake is cooked they stick there. In addition, tradition indicates that a currency inside of this cake also called the saint basil cake, and then whoever receives the portion with the coin inside will be the luckiest in the house. Anyway, in 30 or 40 minutes Vasilopita is ready to occupy the center of the table on January 1.

If you are lucky enough to be visiting a family home, you can see this fun tradition up close. The cake is cut and each member of the family and guests present is given a slice. And according to tradition, some families usually give portions of the Vasilopita to neighbors and friends. But why is it also called the St. Basil's cake?

Well, the Vasilopita is prepared in honor of the saint, who is famous for having the women of his church cook these special cakes with coins inside to give to the poor and needy. A way to receive money without having to beg for it. The charitable tradition has remained in the Greek people as a wish of good fortune, so my saying is that a new year in Greece without Vasilopinta is not worth it.
