Religion in Hungary

Hungary's population is largely Catholic with a minority professing Protestantism. Within the Protestant groups are members of the Hungarian Calvinist Reformed Church and the Hungarian Lutheran Church. In the 1900s they also had a number close to 100 Jews.

From the time of communism (40s) until the late 1980s, religious organizations separated from the State, although there was still a State office dedicated to Church Affairs, which controlled many of their activities. At those moments, when dissolving the different religious orders the government seized different monasteries.

Magyar is the official Hungarian language, it is one of the Finno-Ugric languages ​​that are written with Latin characters influenced by Turkish, Slavic, German and French languages.

Teaching is compulsory for children from 7 to 16 years old. 99.4 percent of the adult population is literate.
