Irish wines, a rarity

Does Ireland make wines? There are irish wines? Ireland makes good beers and whiskeys but… does it make wines? Good question. Until recently it was really difficult to find a vineyard in Ireland and what little there was was concentrated in very, very small, almost personal vineyards. But for some time now the European Commission has officially put the Emerald Isle on the list of European wine producers.

The Irish trend to produce wine is new, it is true, it is more a trend than a concrete reality, but if you are interested in Irish wine you can visit one of the new vineyards. These are mostly concentrated in the area around Cork, in the southwestern corner of the country. One of the first is that of the Bunratty Castle. The carriage house was remodeled in 1979 and Bunratty Mead wine, a sweet wine, is made here. On the other hand there is also the Blackwater Valley Vineyard, in Mallow. They are 5 acres of vineyards nothing more. Also in Mallow is the Longueville House vineyard, but its production is barely enough to supply its own restaurant. Finally, in Kinsale you find the Thomas Walk vineyard.

As you can see, there are not many vineyards in Ireland. This is just beginning in these lands but who knows, maybe in a few decades Irish wines will be something striking.
