Latina, the completely modern city of Italy

Latina

We are used to thinking of antiquity when we think of cities in Italy. But not all Italian cities they are in truth sooo ancient. For example, I have discovered that one of the newest cities in chronological terms dates back to the XNUMXth century. Is about Latina. This city is in the Lazio region and also forms a province. Before urbanization, it was a swampy area, but in the 20s there was the idea of covering the swamps and building a city.

That idea was carried out under the government of Benito Mussolini and the official foundation date is June 30, 1932. Its name was Littoria and on December 18 it was officially inaugurated. Who were its first inhabitants? Well, settlers who came from the Veneto and Friuli area. The buildings that were built at that time are in a rationalist style, in keeping with the political era of the time, and were designed mostly by Marcello Piacentini, among others. It was renamed Latina after the end of World War II.

At one point it was the headquarters of an atomic power plant but today it is closed and is being dismantled, little by little. Latina can be traveled by bicycle, with a free service that you hire in the Plaza del Pueblo, by taxi or by urban bus. Attractive sites: the city itself, the Casa del Martirio di Santa Maria Goretti and the coastal area.
