Undoubtedly one of the most important churches in Italy is the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. This church is located in the Umbria region and is one of the most visited churches by tourists and locals. It is actually a religious complex with a basilica that is the heart of the Franciscan order and a convent where there is also a museum and archives. The construction of the complex dates from the first half of the 1182th century, very shortly after the canonization of Francisco de Asís, a Catholic monk who lived between 1126 and XNUMX.

La Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi It is located near Assisi, on a hill where once the Gauls killed their criminals. That is why it was often called the Hill of Hell, but when the land was donated for the construction of the church the name changed to Hill of Paradise. It is believed that the basilica was designed by the most faithful follower of Saint Francis, Brother Elías. It has two churches and each one has two levels.

The lower basilica was completed in the thirties of the thirteenth century, it has a cross shape and Romanesque style, although later Gothic and Renaissance details were added. The bottom is where the crypt of san francisco, open to the public since the body that remained buried in another site of the church was returned, to prevent theft and desecration. This basilica has frescoes from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries and here you can also visit the chapel where there is an exhibition of some personal objects of the saint.
