The beautiful Amalfi Cathedral

Amalfi Cathedral

In the heart of Amalfi, one of the picturesque villages of Campania, in the province of Salerno, just 35 km from Naples, stands this beautiful church. It's about the St. Andrea Cathedral, Amalfi Cathedral, an imposing XNUMXth century church. It is dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew and as it has been retouched several times throughout its history, different architectural styles coexist in its structure, the Romanesque, the Arab-Norman, the Byzantine and the Baroque.

In the same place, first there was a pagan temple, then a basilica and only later was the cathedral that we see today built. During the Fourth Crusade, in 1206, the remains of San Andres and two years later they were kept in the crypt of the church. The external façade is the product of a 62th century retouch after the original façade fell apart. It has stone and marble and mosaics and a staircase of XNUMX steps, steep and wide, that leaves you at its bronze doors, the first built after the fall of the Roman Empire. The Romanesque-style bell tower took a century to build and includes four small Arabic-style towers adorned with arches and majolica tiles.
