The Medici Chapel, a treasure in Florence

200 meters from where I stopped in Florence on my last trip to Italy was located the Chapel of the Medici. I passed by every day and I never saw many people so I was not in a hurry to visit. And the day finally came when I discovered the chapel and crypt of what was the most important family in the city.

La Medici Chapel It is made up of two buildings located in the Basilica of San Lorenzo and dates from between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. Many tombs of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany are inside and there is a design of Miguel Angel same that is the greatest treasure of the place. On the one hand there is the Sagrestia Nouva and on the other the most famous Capella dei Prinicipi.

La New Sacristy It is a mortuary chapel that contains Michelangelo's monuments to certain members of the Medic family, although they were never finished. In the late 70s a great find was made: a walled corridor that ran under the new sacristy was full of drawings and sketches by Michelangelo.

For its part, Chapel of the Princes It has a 59 meter high dome that is distinguished in the profile of the church and of Florence as a whole. You enter from the outside, today through glass doors. It is somewhat opulent and contains colored marbles and semi-precious stones. There are six tombs, empty, since the crypt is below ground, and 16 compartments with the coats of arms of the Tuscan cities that were at that time under the control of the Medici.
