The Colleoni Chapel, attraction in Bergamo

Colleoni Chapel

About 40 kilometers from the city of Milan is Bergamo. It has its roots in a Celtic people conquered by the Romans and its history is several times centuries old. Inside the so-called Upper City we find the best historical buildings and among them today we talk about the Colleoni Chapel which is next to the church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

The Colleoni Chapel is a church and at the same time a mausoleum. It is dedicated to three saints, Bartolomeo, John the Baptist and Marcos and was built as the personal chapel of Bartolomeo Colleoni, a member of one of the most important families in the city. It was built between 1472 and 1476 on the site where the sacristy of the church of Santa María Maggiore once stood, demolished by its soldiers for the construction of the chapel. The façade is made of polychrome marble, above the entrance door there is a rose window with two medallions on each side, one with the portrait of Trajan and the other with that of Julius Caesar. There are plates with scenes from the Bible, reliefs of the exploits of Hercules and statues of all the Virtues. Inside is the main altar, the tomb of Bartolomeo Colleoni himself (died 1475), decorated with reliefs of the life of Christ and a shiny wooden statue made by German masters in 1501.

In the dome there are many frescoes with the lives of the three saints to whom the chapel is dedicated.
