The crypt of the Medici, in the Basilica of San Lorenzo

interior of the Medici Chapel

One of the largest and most beautiful churches in the no less beautiful city of Florence is the Basilica of San Lorenzo. Inside here the most important members of the legendary Medici family are buried and the church itself was consecrated as a religious temple in 393, thus it is counted among the oldest churches, if not the oldest, of all the churches of Florence.

It has many treasures and many interesting sites inside but one of the most popular and celebrated is the Cappelle Medicee, the Medici chapels that are on the ship. The last member of this dynasty died in 1743, she was Anna Maria Luisa de Medici, great patron of the arts, but in total there are about 50 members of her family who are buried here, in the family crypt, keeping her eternal company. The design of the crypt is the work of Bernardo Buontalenti and above the crypt itself stands the Chapel of the Princes, an octagonal room crowned with a dome that was reserved for the tombs of those who held the title of Grand Duke. Ambitious decoration, some rarities, colored marbles and asymmetrical windows give it a unique style.

Actually, the Medici crypt has two structures, one older and the other more modern. The call New Sacristy was designed by Miguel Angel and it is the first. The second to be built was the Chapel of the Princes with its 59 meter high dome, very opulent.
