The Cave Canem mosaic in Pompeii

The ruins of Pompeii are counted among the main attractions of Italy. After all, they are very well preserved ruins, so much so that they allow us to really see what everyday life was like in ancient Rome. Pompeii and Herculaneum have gone down in history as the tragic cities that disappeared after the eruption of the Vesuvia volcano, but that tragedy so long ago has given us very valuable information about that past.

Many of the elegant houses of PompeiiIt was a recreational city after all, they were decorated with mosaics. The ashes that covered the city for centuries have preserved many of them and among the best known is the mosaic of the dog, the Cave Canem mosaic. This Roman mosaic is at the entrance of the House of the Tragic Poet and represents an important black dog that simply warned whoever was passing by or was about to enter that there was a dog.

This image is reproduced all over Rome and there are also many souvenirs of all kinds with it. For many years the mosaic was in the open and suffered from this situation. The tiles were in bad condition, with cracks, and discolored so the repair was urgent. That is why the Pompeii authorities decided to remove the mosaic from display and subject it to a careful restoration.

And finally, at the beginning of July the Cave Canem mosaic it returned to its original place at the door of the house of the Tragic Poet, as this house has come to be called. The tiles are clean and vivid in color. So that it is not ruined, it has been covered by glass.
