The San Trovaso shipyard, artisan gondola factory in Venice

The place where Italians from Venice make the famous gondolas is called Squero. It is a shipyard, neither more nor less, and being in the city you can visit one to discover the secrets behind the construction of the most popular means of transport in Venice and the one you have always wanted to take. In these shipyards the gondolas and other boats are made by hand by master craftsmen. It is almost an extinct trade but some still survive so you are in time to meet them.

One of them is then the San Trovaso shipyard. It is the most famous shipyard in the area. Look at the canal of the same name and it looks like a mountain resort as it is a charming and picturesque cabin, something unique in all of Venice. Why? Well, the choice of architecture is due to the origin of the wood and has that shape for practical reasons when making the boats. The San Trovaso shipyard It is very old, it is already 600 years old, and in the beginning it produced a great variety of small boats although now it only manufactures gondolas on request.

There are only 5 shipyards left in the entire Venice area and only two of them continue to make boats on a regular basis.
