sestiere of venice

The neighborhoods of the Italian city of Venice are called «sestiere«. In total there are six and the main route between them is the popular Grand Canal that runs through the middle. You can get a map of the Venetian sestiere and aboard the vaporetto or on board public transport launch yourself to explore them.

  • Saint Mark: this is the sestiere most visited by tourists, there is no doubt. Here is the Doge's Palace and Piazza San Marco where sitting down to drink a coffee is an obligation, somewhat expensive but an obligation at the end. There is also the Correr Museum, the Camapanario and the Basilica of San Marco.
  • Santa Croce: it is along the Grand Canal, next to the San Palo sestiere. If you arrive in the city by bus, for example, it is the closest. It is not such a touristy neighborhood but it is one of the oldest in the city. Be careful, here are the most expensive restaurants too.
  • San Palo: It is one of the oldest sectors of the city and San Marco is connected by a bridge, the Rialto Bridge. Here is the popular Fish Market and the vegetable and fruit market, open every morning. It is an area of shops and restaurants but you can also discover medieval nooks and crannies.
  • Castle: it is on the other side of the sestiere San Marco. It is nice to walk and not to run into so many tourists. From Fondamenta Nove the boats that go to the famous Murano Island and here too there is an interesting museum, the Arsenal.
  • Cannaregio: It is the largest neighborhood of all and goes from the Santa Lucía train station to the Rialto Bridge. Its canal is the second largest canal in the city and connects the lagoon with the Grand Canal. It is quite picturesque and houses the Jewish ghetto.
  • Dorsoduro: It is quite large and it is close to the square where taxis and buses arrive to Venice, Piazzale Roma. It houses one of the best museums in the city, the Academy Museum and the Guggenheim Art Collection.
