Visit the Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro, jewel of Milan

Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro

In Milan there are many churches and one of the most beautiful, of the pearls of the city, is the Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro. What a name.

If you are going to visit the Cathedral of Milan you can visit it later because it is very close. This particular church is a fine example of Renaissance art in Milan. It is not a large church but a small one that has its origins in the XNUMXth century although most of the current structure is later.

It was enlarged because a miracle took place, then that original church had to grow to receive more faithful and pilgrims. It was Bramante who was entrusted with the work and he built a whole new building built along the old church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

From those distant and early years there are two bays, a vaulted ceiling and the walls decorated with Gothic frescoes. A treasure is the XNUMXth century wooden statue that shows Saint Christopher and the Child Jesus and that was restored by Bramante himself a hundred years later. Then, there are two united churches, the original San Satiro and the later Santa María.

The structure has changed over the years and today we have three naves and an exquisite dome at the crossroads between the nave and the transept. The interior is beautiful, luxuriously decorated and contains the statue of the Pietá. Do not stop meeting her, seriously. Here is some practical information:

  • Hours: Open from Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Sundays from 2 to 5:30 pm.
  • Admission is free.
