Moroccan traditions: weddings

Continuing with our section of traditions and culture in MoroccoToday we will analyze weddings in this African country.

Morocco is a nation that is still very influenced by its past, and hence in our travels around the nation we find traditions that are extravagant and that make up the Moroccan identity.

Weddings in Morocco They are one of the ceremonies where the influence of tradition can be perceived in large quantities. They last more than a day and the most important factor is the beauty of the woman and the unity on the part of the two families, that of the husband and the wife.

The first day, called Hammam, the bride goes to the public bath with her closest friends and family and performs a ceremonial bath to purify herself. The other women attend her and sing wedding songs to her.

Then comes the Henna, where the woman puts on a traditional dress and her hands and feet are decorated by a woman hired specifically for this purpose. The decoration, which can also be done by some of the closest relatives of the family, signifies a request for prosperity.

Weddings in Morocco begin at night, around 9, and the one who receives the guests is the groom with his family. The last part, towards the evening, is the celebration itself. With the help of four bridesmaids named Neggafate, the bride will change her outfits and will sit in a chair in the center of the room, next to the groom to celebrate and enjoy singing, dancing and food.
