Java Island, contemporary architecture in Amsterdam

Located on a peninsula in the Eastern Docklands area of Amsterdam, Is Java island which was completely renovated in 1995, it is composed of 4 canals, narrow bridges and houses with a profile of contemporary architecture.

All buildings do not exceed 5 floors where pedestrian and bicycle traffic occupy an ideal space on this site which is a marvel of modern architecture and as part of a successful urban renewal project.

Several international architects transformed old abandoned port buildings into residential buildings. The Island of Java had been abandoned due to less trade after the decolonization of Indonesia, which is where the island gets its name.

Postmodern buildings offer a unique living experience, standing against the water and in dense street conditions reminiscent of medieval Europe. The nightlife of squatters and artists from before the demolition of this project still exist in new theater, restaurants, and concert halls.

Diversity in the way that is celebrated in these houses, rather than an attempt at unity. This is a vital lesson in rejuvenating old structures: delineating old structures and transforming them.
