Best season to travel to Sweden

They say it is nature's wonderland and ideal weekend destination, just a short drive from the UK and Ireland. That is why several airlines offer cheap flights to Sweden.

And being home to elk, deer, bear, elk and fox dotted with lakes and with thousands of islands and islets off its shores where the Northern Lights illuminate the sky in the far north and, in the south, the island of Öland welcomes more sun than anywhere else in Sweden, it is certainly a destination to take very seriously.

The climate in Sweden is milder than it should be (as far as its latitude is concerned). The Gulf Stream has a warming effect, and Norway, Sweden, shields from the worst of the weather conditions. The south has a warm, temperate climate, although the weather in the south-west of the country - from Gothenburg to Malmo - is influenced by the ocean. On the east coast, the Baltic Sea often freezes over in winter (see travel skating, below) and is much colder. In the north, the climate is sub-arctic.

As for the best time to travel we have:

High Season

The geographical position means that most of Sweden has very long days in summer and very short days in winter. The best time to search for flights to visit Sweden is between June and August. Spring and fall can be nice too. North of the Arctic Circle, there are 24 hours of sunshine in summer and 24 hours of twilight in midwinter.

Sweden celebrates the summer solstice, the summer solstice, in a big way. Walpurgis Night, April 30, is a night to light bonfires to drive away evil spirits. The feast of Saint Lucia, the giver of light, who fed hungry hungry Sweden centuries after his death, (so legend has it) falls on December 13 and marks the start of the Christmas season.

Low season

It is certainly winter (November to March, with the exception of Christmas) it is, unsurprisingly, out of season.
