Fauna of Brazil: the jaguar

Tourism Brazil

The largest and most beautiful feline in the Americas, of course, is the Jaguar. They used to roam all the tropical areas of the two continents, but now they are mostly limited to the few virgin areas that remain lowlands, especially in the Amazon and the Pantanal, which are mostly within the territory of Brazil. .

In Brazil, these animals inhabit the Atlantic rainforest of the Costa Verde, in the tropical paradise of Ilha Grande and the Laranjeiras Peninsula.

The Atlantic Rainforest watered by the Iguazu Falls is undoubtedly being home to jaguars, as well as the Superagui National Park in Paraná, which is a little-visited coastal area, surprisingly remote from mountains and mangroves, where they survive in reasonable numbers.

Unfortunately, there are very few jaguars left in Brazil and South America. It is estimated that they live close to 25.000 or less according to studies. Another problem is the felling of trees that have destroyed much of the habitat of these cats in Brazil.

In order to see these animals, if you are lucky, you have to head to the wetlands and savannas of the Pantanal in the rainy season which is from December to April. Jaguars can be seen on the outskirts of wetlands, in canals or on muddy shores. Porto Jofre, in particular, has been a region inhabited by the upstream of the city on the Piquiri River.

All trips are made by boat, so the trips are seasonal, and under the guidance of expedition specialists.
