One of the towns considered charming and that you cannot miss if you visit or are from the province of Castellón is Vilafamés, with its famous castle that I want to talk a little bit about today.

The castle of Vilafamés is located at the upper end of the old town, but do not be scared, its access is quite easy. By the way from the town hall page they recommend a route that will take us to it. It would be to go from the Plaza de la Fuente, through the Roca Grossa, and from there, through the cobbled Calle Cervantes and Calle de la Iglesia, to reach the Plaza de la Sangre, where you can access the Quartijo where the oldest buildings are. of the population and by those stairs go up to the castle.

This castle is of Muslim origin, Its foundations and different documents refer to the conquest of Beni-Hamez by King Jaime I of Aragon and that is when the current Vilafamés takes on a historical identity. This conquest led to the fact that on August 30, 1241, Jaime I commissioned Guillem Ramón de Viella, Domingo Ballester, A.Cabrera and other knights to grant him the population card.

However the enclosure has been specially rebuilt during the fourteenth century by the Order of Montesa and, it is from this time what is preserved. At this time, when you visit the castle, what you notice is a series of defensive enclosures, more or less preserved, with a large tower that completely dominates the complex and the city.

The tower of the castle of Vilafamés, the so-called Torre del Homenaje, is circular in plan and trococonic elevation, with numerous loopholes that surround it. During the Carlist Wars XNUMXth century Château it was used by riflemen and gunners.

To get to Vilafamés you have to access through the CV-10, the road that goes to Sant Mateu; At the height of Pobla Tornesa, take the detour towards Albocàsser on the CV-15 and, almost immediately, you see the detour on the CV-160 that leads to the little town and the unmissable views that you can enjoy from the castle.
