Music in Egypt

Musicians

The human being has always been seen seduced by music, either vocal or instrumental, or combining both. This art accompanies us from the moment we are born until we leave the world, since all celebrations, parties, events,… have their specific musical sound. Each civilization creates its own melodies, and in Egypt we can hear different sounds in every corner.

In the land of the Pharaohs music is enjoyed at weddings and at all kinds of special moments.

Music in Ancient Egypt

Music was used as a therapeutic remedy. In fact, the hieroglyph that described her also meant well-being. Indeed: believed that listening to different melodies helped the body to recover after an illness, something like it happens today with music therapy.

The instruments they used haven't changed much over the centuries. There were strings and percussion, such as: harp, drums, trumpets, cymbals ... among others.

Folk music

Currently the music that has the most prominence is pop music. Since its introduction in the country in the 60s, it is taking folk music a bit into the background. Even so, more and more groups are choosing to return to their musical origins. So much so that a "network" for the protection of traditional music has been formed in Cairo.

This type of music is part of the heritage of ancient Egypt that, generation after generation, have made it last to this day. Listening to traditional melodies, it is not difficult to imagine a ceremony where the Pharaoh held an event, while watching the guests dance. It is also ideal to accompany us on a camel ride through the desert, or on a journey along the Nile.

Among several, we want to recommend two musical groups that will surely make you dream. One of them is called The musicians of the Nile, and the other is Hassam Ramzy. We leave you with a melody by Mr. Ramzy, so you can familiarize yourself before leaving for Egypt.
