The Philippine Trench, one of the deepest in the world

Oceanic trench

To the east of the archipelago, precisely in the heart of the Philippine Sea, in the Pacific Ocean, is the so-called Philippine Trench, an ocean depression that stands out above the rest for its depth.

Also known as Mindanao Trench, due to its proximity to the east coast of the mindanao island, this grave was born as a consequence of subduction process that happens when two tectonic plates collide and one plunges below the other.
The trench has a length of 1320 kilometers and a width close to 30 kilometers, extending from the center of the island of Luzon to the north of the Moluccas, already in the Indonesian archipelago. Next to the trench is the East Luzon Trench, which are separated by the Benham Plateau.

The Philippine Trench is one of the deepest ocean trenches in the world, reaching at its deepest point -the galathea depth- the 10.540 meters.

Undoubtedly, the Philippines has many geographical attractions and this huge trench is one of them, a depression that has been widely studied by geologists and physicists due to its characteristics.
