Tamtoc, archaeological site of the Huasteca Culture

En San Luis de Potosi you can live the stimulating experience of touring an archaeological site of great attraction.

Most of the excavations have been carried out in the Huasteca Region where we find Tamtoc, an impressive archaeological site, the largest discovered in the place, which extends over an area of 133 hectares and where you can see more than 70 structures grouped into three dispersed groups within a well-organized urban complex, well ahead of its time, and several sculptures, including one representing the ruler of Tamtoc and the other the lunar calendar.

According to archaeologists Tamtoc was a city that at its peak (around 800 BC), was inhabited for more than 5.000 citizens. Its importance lies in the fact that, in addition to being contemporary to the Olmec culture, the findings and latest research provide a new vision of the pre-Hispanic cultures of the Mexican northeast, which could change the history that we had known up to now.

According to the remains discovered so far, there are signs of occupation from 600 BC to 1500 AD approximately.

What is truly surprising is a stone weighing several tons discovered on February 27, 2005 call monument 32, a relic that astonished archaeologists already places the civilization on the same dates that the Olmec culture flourished.

The monolith, fragmented into two blocks, shows three female anthropomorphic figures, as well as geometric symbols that possibly represent an agricultural calendar. It is so far the most important that has been discovered and seems to indicate a matriarchal society.
