Da Vinci's horse statue

Da Vinci's horse

In front of Milan Hippodrome Park, there is a great marble statue. It is a horse in life size which is inspired by one of the drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci.

The celebrated artist intended to create the largest equestrian statue in the world And so he began to design it with the idea that he would create a work that would unite his artistic talent with his technical skills.

The work was born by order of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, who wanted to build a life-size horse statue to place inside the Sforzesco Castle. At the beginning, various artists were consulted until in 1493 Leonardo became interested and began to make some drawings.

In 1993, he made a model of the statue that was never cast but never managed to go ahead as different historical events forced Da Vinci to postpone it. In 1499 Leonardo left Milan and his horse model was badly damaged when French soldiers used it in white for their crossbows.

But in 1999 the work was recovered and placed on a marble and granite structure. Since then he has accompanied the racecourse to attract the gaze of all those who want to approach the da Vinci's work.
