Old ships of Portugal

Old ships often convey a sense of nostalgia and romance to this day. They remind us of a magical time when exploration was carried out by charismatic sailing ships and men who have heroically searched for distant new worlds.

These old ships sailed the seven seas and were the only means to travel between the known world and the mysterious ocean abyss of the unknown.

Today they are especially appreciated because they have an elegant character and an elegant beauty, it remains legendary than timeless.

Modern ships simply cannot emulate the visceral historical authenticity that older ships possess. One of them is the Brig Gazela , the oldest and largest ship that sails in the world until today.

Built in 1883 in Portugal, it aimed to navigate the coasts and seas of Labrador and Newfoundland, an Atlantic province of Canada.

This ship left Lisbon in the spring full of fishermen with their load of salt in order to preserve the cod for the long return home.

After its voyage in 1933, the Philadelphia Maritime Museum purchased the ship from philanthropist William Wikoff Smith. On May 24, 1971, with an American crew, the ship was brought to the city of Philadelphia where there is a non-profit corporation, which now maintains and operates the ship with the help of donors and volunteers.
