Azores festivals

All the Feasts of the Holy Spirit in the Azores, it is celebrated especially in Terceira and also in São Jorge and Pico, which attract a large number of visitors to the islands.

And it is that it is an Azorean religious tradition that is celebrated in all the islands from May to September which attract hundreds of faithful to the small chapels of each town. Thanks to the first settlers, the festivities of the Holy Spirit maintain their medieval origin, in terms of their popular characteristics and the color of the ceremonies.

The invocation of the Holy Spirit during the natural disasters that have plagued the archipelago and the fame of his miracles, the hard life and the isolation of the islands contributed to the cult's roots and lasting, while these traditions disappeared in mainland Portugal.

The rituals have hardly been altered. An emperor is crowned in the parish church with a scepter and a silver plaque as a symbol of the Holy Spirit, who presides over the festivities every Sunday for the seven weeks after Easter.

On Pentecost Sunday, there is a great feast in town. The center of the ceremonies is a small chapel, or "empire", which is used for the distribution of the soup of the Holy Spirit, with meat and vegetables. This is where the crown, plaque, and scepter can be seen on the altar.

The passage of time has given the festivities of the Holy Spirit, the individual characteristics of each island, although some common elements have remained such as the coronation of the 'emperor', the display of the insignia - the crown and the scepter - the procession of the 'Emperor' and 'Empress' with their escort, on the feast day, when the offerings of bread, meat and wine are distributed.

By the way, the parades with period costumes are very popular, surrounded by a climate of religiosity.
