The Dormition Cathedral in Moscow

La Cathedral of the Dormition o de la Asuncion, is one of the oldest carved white stone temples in the Kremlin of Moscow. Its construction dates from the years 1475-1479.

In 1514, the cathedral was embellished with frescoes painted by the best inspiring paintings of old Russia. These paintings, part of which has been preserved on the altar of the Celebration of the Virgin, are distinguished by the great skill with which they are made.

The central part of the temple is separated from the altar by an iconostasis of 5 superimposed series and almost 16 meters high, which at the end of the XNUMXth century was covered with embossed gilt silver.

Magnificent works of ancient Russian painting are housed in the iconostasis. The Cathedral of the Assumption was the main temple of ancient Russia, a sign of the power and greatness of the centralized Russian state. There all the solemn announcements took place and the provisions of the State were made public. There Ivan IV was the first to receive the title of tsar.

The cathedral is dedicated to one of the most significant festivals which is the Assumption of the Virgin. That is why most of the frescoes represent scenes from the life of the Virgin. There are also the icons of the Virgin of Vladimir, that of Saint George and the Trinity. The throne of Ivan the Terrible and the "Site of the Patriarch."
