Russian traditional crafts

Tourism Russia

La russian crafts It is part of the tradition of its peoples whose art has been transmitted from generation to generation. Precisely, one of the most popular crafts is the tableware from the workshops of the town Khokhloma.

Traditions have been carefully preserved and developed by modern masters who are still working in this town which is near Nizhniy Novgorod, 400 km east of Moscow.

Khokhloma's painting amazes with its delicate poetic floral design and festive color, which is based on the combination of scarlet cinnabar and sparkling gold against the lacquered black background. Items with Khokhloma ornamentation are nothing more than souvenirs, which can be used to store and serve food and at the same time add a fine touch to your interior.

We must also mention the first workshops of the town of Zhostovo (not far from Moscow) which emerged in the early 19th century. They produced painted and lacquered trays with ornamentation that were initially rather modest.

In 1830 - 1840, oval or round trays began to appear in some of the workshops, first made of paper pulp and then, in the middle of the 19th century - of iron. These became very popular and were in great demand in Moscow and other regions.

The art of decorating the trays developed due to the appearance of prominent masters whose traditions are preserved to this day. Manufacturing is still in the works and now you can admire the miraculous patterns of its unmatched trays.
