10056

Monday, an excellent day to discover new cities and investigate them for the rest of the week, today our itinerary through Russia takes us to Belgorod city, On the banks of Seversky Donets River, just over 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

It is the capital city of Belgorod Oblast and it has an international airport, in addition to a stable population that exceeds 330.000 inhabitants.

The name Belgorod can be translated as "White City" and was given by the important limestone reserves in the area. Other names of the corresponding Slavic tradition, etymologically, are found in Beograd and Biograd, among others.

The first time that the town of Belgorod is named is around 1237, in full invasion of the area at the hands of the barbarians led by Batu Khan. In 1596 the city was refounded by order of Boris Godunov, who sought to defend the southern area from the attacks of Crimean Tatars.

Some of the most important buildings and points to visit in the city include the old Television Tower, which was never completed, and the building of Belgorod State University.

During World War II, Belgorod was occupied by Nazi soldiers, and the village of Prokhorovka (belonging to Belgorod Municipality) was the scene of the largest tank battle in world history.
